Growing up, my mom took me to the park to feed ducks, squirrels, and other wildlife and we would even buy animals just to set them free. She always taught me to take care of animals and respect them and I enjoyed it. Eventually I became aware of how much harm farm animals are put through and how simple choices I made every day directly contributed. I reduced my reliance on products harmful to animals and supported organizations that made a difference towards protecting them.
Then one day I joined a Meetup group that held a volunteer day at BSAS and I loved it. Never before did I get to see pigs so close up and so free and happy. I groomed horses, I pet sheep, I marveled at emus and alpacas, and experienced a family of volunteers that cared for these animals in ways I had never before experienced first-hand. I try to support BSAS in every way I can because they are doing things for animals in need that I only wish I could accomplish myself. I already have my favorite residents to give pets and love to when I’m able to volunteer (Beau and Maria are the best!) and I always leave the sanctuary thinking “that was a good day!”.
